History of Melbourne's Pavement Lights
In the late 1800's, Melbourne was becoming a wealthy promenade-friendly city, largely influenced by its British heritage.
Many grand buildings were architecturally designed and constructed with basements, generally used for storage.
Electric lighting was not yet commonplace in those early days, so building designers needed to provide natural light.
In response, they specified glass-block prisms mounted within the footpath pavement above to reflect natural sunlight into the basement below.
These Pavement Light Systems are still in use today and are still as beautiful and durable as when they were first used.
Not many people know how to properly care for these systems today,
- but we do.

Peter Jensen was a Managing Director of Worboys Plumbing where he worked for 48 years.
Peter helped build Worboys to be the leading CBD plumbing company in Melbourne.
The company have been working on Pavement Lighting Systems across the city for almost 70 years after they took over the work from a glazing company who had closed its doors.
Peter and his business partners sold their stake in Worboys in 2018 and Peter took over the Pavement Lights work across the CBD and surrounds.
Pavement Light Systems Melbourne was created and continues the fine tradition of repairing and maintaining these beautiful fittings for the grand buildings of Melbourne.
